For some people doing physical activity or hitting the gym is a no brainer. They have an unconscious understanding that this is an important aspect of their life. They understand that “working out” makes them look and feel great. For others, like myself, planning to be active is a constant exercise in self discipline, wellbeing and mindfulness. After having been a competitive athlete for many years, I have found working out and training to be happy and healthy is more challenging now than when I was a competitive athlete training for hours on end. As an athlete, movement and mindset are ways of life. This is not something you plan to go and do just look good. Being committed to something bigger than yourself was much easier than training for health and wellness. After talking with numerous retired athletes ranging from high school to pros, working out to look good and feel good does not readily come easy. If you are one this struggles to get “motivated” to work out, you may need to re-define your sense of purpose and reframe your goals. Start small, get out of you head telling yourself, ” I used to train 4 hours a day, what is 15 min. going to do for me?”…. The truth is…15 minutes will do a lot for you. You will feel better both physically and mentally.
